POINTER IN THE STRAW

Equipment: straw, pointer

Purpose: To develop depth perception, increase skill in making spatial judgments.

Procedure: Therapist holds straw in various positions while patient attempts to place tip of pointer into the end of the straw. Therapist should place the straw in a variety of different positions of gaze with varying angles of presentation. Patient may then switch hands.

Gradations:

  1. Start with large cylinders, like paper towel tubes and dowels,
and decrease to large straws, the smaller straws.

  2. Use two straws, one in each hand, with patient holding a
pointer in each hand and alternate hands.

  3. Increase speed.

Note: This exercise may be used with patients with monocular
vision, who need to develop one-eyed skills in judging depth. It may
also be used for hemianopsia or neglect compensation training,
presenting the straw in the hemianopic or field of neglect.
