ECCENTRIC CIRCLES

Introduction: The eccentric circles (EC) offer two types of exercises, which work on developing different skills, and should not be confused.. One type is for convergence training, the second is for divergence training. Keep in mind what your goal is, and what you are training.

CONVERGENCE VARIATION

Equipment: Two cards with EC on them, preferable on separate cards and a pointer (pencil will do).

Purpose: Convergence training, depth perception, accommodation training, binocular coordination.

Procedure: Hold EC at arms length along midline with one hand and hold the pointer halfway between the cards and your nose with the other hand. Look at the tip of the pointer. If one is looking precisely at the tip, but being aware of the cards in the background, one will notice that the circles have merged together, and that there are now three sets of circles. Pay attention to just the middle set of circles. Observe for a depth effect, where one of the circles of the middle set appears to be either closer or further away.

Gradations:

  1. Remove the pointer while still holding the illusion of three, and maintaining depth.
  2. Slowly move the two cards apart, keeping the illusion.
  3. Walk around and you hold the illusion
  4. Look away, look back and quickly recover the three sets with depth. Look away and back 20 times.

DIVERGENCE VARIATION

Equipment: clear acetate EC and a fixation spot on the wall.

Purpose: to develop binocular coordination with emphasis on divergence ability.

Procedure: Sit about five feet from the wall. Slowly raise the cards up until they cover your line of sight, about a foot from your face. At this point the patient should be seeing three sets of circles. If not, redirect the patient's attention to the fixation spot on the wall. Another method is to start with the cards touching your nose, slowly moving them away from the face until three sets are seen.

Gradations:

  1. Get the depth illusion, it should be just the opposite from what it was for the convergence variation.
  2. Get the circles clear
  3. Slowly move the cards apart, maintaining the illusion.
  4. Look away and back recovering the three, depth and clear easily and quickly 20 times.
