Contact lenses

Contact lens development is a rapidly growing field. Contacts are available for a variety of visual needs: to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, even bifocals. They are available in rigid gas permeable design, or soft. The conventional lens is one pair worn as a daily lens for a year, but most lenses are now disposable: either a daily disposable, 2 week, monthly or quarterly. Some can be slept in for one week or now up to one month (extended wear). The eye color can be enhanced or completely changed by an opaque lens. "Wild Eyes" can be worn for Halloween (cat eye, vampire, hypnotica, etc.).

If you have never worn contact lenses, first an eye exam is done, then a contact lens fitting is completed. The corneal curvatures are measured, and a compatible lens is ordered, or pulled from stock. The lenses are placed on the eye by the doctor, and the vision and healthy fit is evaluated. Changes are made if needed, then, if all is well, you are trained how to remove and insert the lens yourself, proper handling and lens care, correct use of solutions, and beginning wearing schedule. This is followed by a one week contact lens check, where further modifications are made if needed. The final prescription is determined and then a six months or one year supply is ordered.
