ALPHABET PENCILS

Equipment: Two pencils with the alphabet written on them, (available from Efficient Seeing).

Purpose: To develop accommodative convergence, and awareness of physiological diplopia.

Procedure: Hold one pencil out at arms length (or therapist holds it), along midline of body, and hold second pencil halfway between far pencil and nose. Look at far pencil, should see that one single and two near pencils on either side. Then shift focus to near pencil. With this pencil single, the far one should now be double.

The exercise is to shift focus back and forth from near to far looking at each letter of the alphabet. The awareness of physiological diplopia should be maintained throughout the exercise.

Gradation:

  1. While shifting back and forth, slowly move the closer pencil in closer, until the letters on the near pencil get blurry, then move it back out, and back in, etc.
  2. Increase the speed of shifting from letter to letter.
  3. Include a third point of focus in the far distance and include that point in the focus shift, e.g. "A" (near), "A" (far), Clock (on far wall).
  4. Introduce balance tasks, e.g. walking around while shifting, being pushed around in a wheelchair, standing on a balance board, and being pushed in a slow circle in a wheelchair.
